The Composer

XAVIER PARLANT (b. 1970) started playing the drums at the age of 17. A few months later, he studied at the Lajudie Drums School in Limoges (France) where he discovered the pedagogical advantages of rhythmic reading. He obtained the Certification of Scenic and Pedagogical Aptitude in France in 1994. After having been teaching drums since 1990, he joined Lajudie Drums Trio in 1996, a very requested group to give drums workshops and master-classes all around France.

XAVIER PARLANT also played in some French groups as NEW DEAL (Pop Rock), Bernard Entraygues Trio (Rock), K6 (Rock Metal Electro / SACEM Price at Bourges Spring Festival 2004), Cosmic Yogurt Group (1993), AliciaChic (Electro Dance Floor, since 2008). Meaning and structure of Sherow Mustery Bar

As Xavier Parlant said, SHEROW MUSTERY BAR could mean “the mysteries of Sherow to the baritone beginners”.

The work was commissioned by Portuguese and based in France saxophonist Silvia Ribeiro Ferreira. Silvia wanted to premiere an electronic music piece for baritone saxophone for her “Prix de la Ville de Limoges” in June 2011. In addition to other “classical” works for baritone, she played this piece in a trio version with keyboards and drums.

I perfectly remember that premiere because I also applied for this Prize. Silvia and I were students of the Cycle Perfectionnement: Saxophone Baryton with Damien Royannais at CRR Limoges. After the final concert, I proposed Xavier Parlant (he was the drums player) to do a version for baritone saxophone and electronics.

Later, while I was working on it, I asked Xavier Parlant to add some melodic parts to the piece.  He agreed on condition that I didn’t make any changes to the structure and didn’t remove any original theme and rhythm. So, I sent my version to Parlant to revise it and that’s it. You have already listened to it above.

I performed it in concert many times. It is a very playful work. I like to play works of different styles of music, also modern (even disco music). Sometimes, I worked on it with my students because it is a very appealing piece to approach the baritone sax, electronics (also in a broad view) and modern music.
