BARITONE SAXOPHONE PEDAGOGY

TEACHING SAXOPHONE

I have been teaching saxophone since the 1992–93 academic year. Over the years, I have taught at several music schools in Catalonia and France. Since 2003, I have been a saxophone professor at the Escola i Conservatori de Música de la Diputació in Reus (Tarragona).

I enjoy teaching saxophone and chamber music across a wide range of styles, with a particular interest in contemporary music. Above all, I see teaching as a way of helping students become open-minded musicians and individuals.

PROMOTING THE BARITONE

Alongside my career as a performer, I have also been committed to sharing knowledge about the baritone saxophone — its repertoire, techniques and many possibilities — and this BLOG has become one of the main spaces where I do so.

The remarkable work carried out by Eric Devallon (RIP) and Damien Royannais through the Rencontres Internationales autour du Saxophone Baryton, held in Ambazac (France) between 2008 and 2011, encouraged me to join them as a member of the Association Bar&Co and later to continue their legacy.

Since then, promoting the baritone saxophone has become an important part of my work. Through this Blog, I aim to encourage young saxophonists to explore the instrument and composers to contribute to its growing repertoire. I have also shared this work through courses, workshops, masterclasses and talks for saxophonists and composers across Europe and in Australia and New Zealand, including collaborations with my Dutch colleagues from the Baritone Institute.

If you would like to contact me about any pedagogical aspect of the baritone saxophone, feel free to write to me at sax@joanmf.com
