Comments on BELIEVER
Joan Martí-Frasquier invites us to a tour through some pieces that, for him, define the present and the future of music. Focused on the baritone sax, this value of statement leads him in two different directions: solo sax and its combination with the synthetic music. In the first way, Martí-Frasquier heads to an exhaustive exploration of the timbre of the instrument, which this resource becomes a goal, an objective achieved by variations of intensity, response, articulation and rhythm, as well as using other sonorities: different sorts of air sounds, voicing and key sounds. The major part of the proposed pieces is based in these elements and their different contrasts, worked on the opposition among them and the resolution by the union of opposed ideas. The most interesting of this kind of pieces is Trois rêves en musique by [José] Luis Campana (2015), a work structured in three movements with a simple idea for each one that Martí-Frasquier develops with great technical skills and timbre variety which leads us from the most absolute calm to the most unbearable irritation. The second way launch us to a not very well effective experience by the blend of the sax with some released by the computer in Jackdaw by Wayne Siegel (1953), which final part is interesting because of the delays which Martí-Frasquier splits his sax; and in Believer by Jacob Ter Veldhuis (2007), a piece betwixt and between a music composition and a sound masterpiece, interesting because of its concept. This little sample of the present and the future is already here.

Joan demonstrates a mastery of the instrument which he is an specialist and a thorough knowledge of the contemporary language. I would make room for it in my music library with no doubt.

Congratulations! I love the concept of so many different styles on one disc, an to tell you the truth, was very moved by Believer, your playing is very intense, raw, bluesy, but also sweet…

Your CD is a great achievement! I of course eager to listen to Oxyton. Bravo, very well done. You have a great dynamic and great energy, and of course a superb mastery of the baritone.CHRISTOPHE HAVEL on Oxyton
It was great to listen to Joan’s premiere version of Solitudini, already some years ago. Later life versions of him have turned this piece into a unique experience of an accurated evolution. Now, this studio version is a real milestone: concentrated, sensitive, delicate, but intensely strong and organic; difficult to surpass.

Why have I recorded a CD?
Sometimes, I have though in recording a CD with pieces from my repertoire, but I was not too much sure because of the investment of time, job and also money. I found interesting the Antonio Velasco’s proposal because it would be a collaborative project between record label and performer and since this CD would be the first of a new collection of music written nowadays.
We easily arranged our deal in a few meetings and I immediately started to think in the repertoire of my first solo album (I hope that it won’t be the last!) and the first of the INS (Imagine New Sounds) collection of InSitu label.
Furthermore, the baritone is a member of the family of saxophones which gave me such musical satisfactions that I determinately decided to specialize on it in spite of not being a mediatic instrument. So, what’s wrong with that?
Why “Believer”?
I wanted a concise name for my first CD in solitary and the word “Believer” (also the title of one of the works recorded) describes very well my conviction about baritone saxophone and music.
I wanted to record some repertoire that defines the present and future of music. You can here listen to some representative works of the repertoire of the instrument (as Oxyton or Jackdaw) and some recent works that I hope lead a way on the repertoire of this instrument in the next future. In my opinion, music, as an art, needs a permanent evolution. So, I chose a repertoire that shows a wide range of options or styles (call them as you wish…) in music.
Something else?
Yes, two more things:
- You can get more information about the repertoire and the composers scanning the QR code (we preferred this option instead of a booklet) inside the CD.
- You will also find Premiere Recordings of the following works: Solitudini by Enric Riu, Geometrías 1 by Antonio Velasco, Trois Rêves en Musique by José Luis Campana, Fantaisie et Danse by Ryo Noda and Believer by Jacob TV.
That’s not bad, isn’t it? So, purchase it here and enjoy!
